The speed measurement application records the data transfer speed, based on the IP protocol, between your personal computer and your provider’s network. This is done by downloading a file to your computer and then uploading it back to the server. You can run the test more than once and compare the results. The results are given in kilobits per second (Kbps) and are calculated based on the size of the file transferred and the time it takes to send and receive it during the test.

For the test to be reliable, you should close all applications that use the network (local or Internet) before starting, as they can significantly affect the results. The speed reported by the speed test can be influenced by various factors such as: the network path taken to the test server, the time of day you perform the test and the level of network congestion at that moment, and the methodology used by the speed test (i.e., the size of the file exchanged between the server and your computer during the measurement).

If you are connected directly to your provider’s network, the speed test reflects the data transfer speeds for Download and Upload, without the involvement of the rest of the Internet (public internet). These speeds are expected to be lower than the nominal synchronization speed of your ADSL modem, due to the “translation” of network communication protocols. If the test is performed from a computer connected to another network, the results may show lower speeds due to delays on the Internet.

Results between similar tools may differ for the following reasons:

1. Each tool uses a different measurement methodology (such as different file sizes or multiple files)

2. Due to the involvement of other networks and the delays they may cause

When using speed measurement tools from your computer, you should pay attention to the following:

• Protect your PC from viruses, download the latest service packs and updates
