What is Band Steering?

Band Steering, is a feature designed to improve your equipment’s Wi-Fi connection, so you get the best service on any device connected via Wi-Fi in your home.

Your equipment operates with two different Wi-Fi bands:

  • 2.4 GHz band: More coverage, but less speed.

  • 5 GHz band: More speed, but less coverage.

The network names are unique for each customer, and if you haven’t changed them, you’ll find them on the sticker on the back of your router.

With Band Steering enabled, you connect to a single SSID, and your device will automatically switch to the band that offers the best coverage and speed depending on its distance from your equipment.

Keep in mind that even if some of your devices are not dual-band (don’t support both bands), you’ll still be connected as usual, but you won’t benefit from this feature.

When this feature is enabled, it’s possible that one of your devices may lose its Wi-Fi connection. This happens because it was connected only to the 5 GHz band, and that specific network name disappears when Band Steering is activated. To restore the connection and enjoy the functionality, you need to reconnect it to the Wi-Fi router by following these steps:

Access the Wi-Fi settings of your affected device and, under “Available networks,” select the common SSID of the network you want to connect to with the “Unique name.” Enter the password—if you haven’t changed it, it’s the same as the one on your router’s label. This feature is especially useful for optimizing the online experience of devices like Google Chromecast, gaming consoles, or Android TV.

Instructions to disable via router interface

  1. Type 192.168.2.1 into your browser.

  2. Log in with the Username and Router password, which you’ll find on the back of your router.

  3. From the horizontal red bar, select "Wi-Fi" and then "General" from the side menu.

  4. On the screen that appears, locate SSID Separation and "The off switch".

  5. Don’t forget to click the Apply button at the bottom of the screen to save your changes.

  6. The process is complete once you see the message "Your changes have been applied."

Unified Wi-Fi networks are available on the following equipment:

Important: The Super Wi-Fi service, which works with the Vodafone Power Station Wi-Fi 6, operates exclusively with a unified network (band steering).
